01 / THE TIMBER

Before the woods
woke up.

Some days stay with you before anything happens.

We stopped where the trail narrowed and listened. A bugle carried through the trees, then the timber went quiet again. Neither of us reached for a phone.

We never closed the distance that morning. On the walk out, we talked about coming back when the wind turned. What I wanted to remember was simpler: the light, the sound, and a few hours with my brother.

02 / THE RIVER

One more cast.

The best part of the morning never made it onto a scorecard.

The coffee was still warm when we reached the water. We took turns working the bend, trading flies and the kind of stories that somehow get better every season.

There were missed takes and a few clean drifts. We stayed longer than we meant to. On the way home, we agreed the next trip needed fewer plans and a second thermos.

A useful note for next time. A memory for much longer.

03 / THE FIELD

Follow the dogs.

A long walk. Two good dogs. Nowhere else we needed to be.

The dogs worked ahead while we followed the edge of the cover. Every so often, one would look back as if to ask what was taking us so long.

By the truck, our boots were dusty and the conversation had turned to old hunts. We gave the dogs water, took one more photograph, and let the afternoon run a little longer.

Some of the best chapters have muddy boots.
